To celebrate our fifth birthday, I worked with NET-A-PORTER to create an exclusive pair of espadrilles, for our Alighieri community to walk with the courage of a lion.
As Dante travels through the underworld, his footsteps are unprecedented, and his travels through the scraggy landscape are fraught with challenges.
Nobody depicted Dante’s journey in the same way as Salvador Dalì did, in his illustrations of the “Divina Commedia”. Always looking to Dalì’s magical work, I began to look more at his singular style. Inspired by the way in which he wore his espadrilles in the French Riviera, in Paris, and on the rocks of Cadaques, we sought out the artisans in Barcelona who used to fabricate Dalì’s very shoes, and convinced them to work with us.
I wanted to create a pair that could be worn all summer, with a gilded teardrop, wrapped around the ankle, like a talisman collected on your travels.
When you retire your espadrille for the summer, you can slide the talismans off the ribbon and add them to your necklace layers in the winter.
The Teardrops on the Dance Floor Espadrille is inspired by the one tear of salvation cried by Buonconte da Montefeltro in the "Divine Comedy". It celebrates the cathartic power of water and is designed to bring you courage and joy on your summer dance floors.
