SUSTAINABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY, ETHICS_
At Alighieri, we believe in creating forever heirlooms with a sustainable and transparent practice.
We keep our carbon footprint low by using local craftsman who manufacture our talismans in bronze, recycled gold and silver a stone's throw from our studio in London's oldest jewellery district Hatton Garden. Each piece starts with our founder, Rosh Mahtani, a Roman candle, and the wax. She hand carves each talisman like little sculptures, imbuing them with emotion and story.
This delicate, textured wax sculpture, is then wrapped up, and walked over to our casters three doors away.
Every step of our process is driven by human beings and their stories, from Dante to Rosh to our A-team... to you.
The talismans are cast in bronze, recycled gold and 100% recycled eco sterling silver.
The recycled gold and silver come from Cooksongold who are part of the Heimerle + Meule GmbH group and certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council. All waste returns to the foundry to be cast again into more talismans the following day.
Many of our chains are handmade, link by link in the studio; all other chains are sourced from responsible suppliers and we are working towards ensuring all of our chains are attained from RJC-certified suppliers.
Each of our pearls are completely unique, they all vary in shape and size. The pearls we use are farmed - we believe environmental and social stewardship are fundamental aspects of responsible pearl farming and, where possible, we choose to work with suppliers and pearl farmers who share our beliefs.
THE DIAMONDS AND GEMSTONES_
Our diamonds are ethically sourced and adhere to the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council's System of Warranties. We only source our diamonds from trusted RJC-certified diamond suppliers. Each diamond used in our jewellery is assessed by its cut, colour, clarity, and carat and are all hand set in place in our Hatton Garden studio.
Our Gemstones originate from all over the world and are ethically sourced through our trusted suppliers, the majority RJC-certified. Each gemstone is hand-picked for its quality and hand placed in each piece of jewellery in our Hatton Garden studio.
Like our jewellery, the packaging is designed to last a lifetime and provide a safe place for our customers to store their Alighieri heirlooms. Our packaging is produced in audited factories, ensuring fair and kind working conditions for all their staff. Any boxes that are damaged or returned, are used in other aspects of the business.
We aim to have 100% recycled packaging by 2022.
Rosh is incredibly passionate about using Alighieri as a vehicle to support communities and raise awareness for those without a voice to tell their own stories.
In 2019, we designed 3 pieces inspired by the work of the Conservation Lower Zambezi, a charity working to protect wildlife and sustainable use of natural resources in Zambia, where Rosh grew up. 10% of the RRP of these pieces was donated to CLZ.
In February 2020, we partnered with the Trussell Trust, a charity supporting food banks in the UK, in their Covid-19 campaigns against food poverty. We donated 20% of our online sales to help those most affected by poverty, raising a total of just over £55,000 in three months.
We have now partnered with Refuge, the UK’s leading charity helping women and their children experiencing domestic abuse. We have raised over £65,000 for Refuge, and continue to work with them as a long term charity partner of Alighieri.
Alighieri is highly invested in protecting and supporting the local heritage and craft of Hatton Garden and the UK’s historic jewellery manufacturing quarters. We create jobs and facilitate apprenticeships and maintain a walkable supply chain practice in our Hatton Garden neigbourhood.
The original collection of talismans is designed to bring you strength and courage on your adventures.
It all began when Rosh found Dante Alighieri lost in the Inferno, confronted by a lion... The lion was so terrifying that even the air around him was “trembling with fear”.
The lion forces him to summon strength and has become Rosh's everyday symbol of courage.
