Our story_
Rosh Mahtani founded Alighieri to guide her through a dark time. Each fragmented talisman is inspired by Dante Alighieri’s own story of being lost in a dark wood. These Modern Heirlooms celebrate the beauty of human imperfection and vulnerability.
Our Founder_
Rosh Mahtani spent her early childhood in Zambia, Africa where her parents grew up. She spent her days creating imaginary universes with her little brother, collecting stones, leaves and shells - imbuing them with magical powers.
Moving to London, aged 8, she found herself searching for her place in the world. She went on to study French and Italian at Oxford, where she fell in love with Dante Alighieri.
Dante’s story of being lost, afraid and uncertain stayed with her as she struggled with her own self-doubt. Unsure about her journey - both personal and career - she sought a way to weave together her love of magical objects, photography and human stories.
“The question of identity - where am I from, where do I belong - drove me to create my own universe.” - R.M.
In 2014, she began to carve one piece of jewellery for each Canto of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Her lack of formal training allowed her to access a freedom and forge her own language of imperfect textures to bring her strength and courage on life’s adventures , whatever they might be.

Modern Heirlooms_
Alighieri creates timeless Modern Heirlooms rooted in literature and art.
“The story of my grandparents leaving India in 1944 with just a few gold coins and heirlooms cemented the power of those objects for me. They are a way to pass memories down generations, and to carry the strength of your ancestors, to unlock your own story.
During my travels, I became fascinated by the fact that every culture uses jewellery in this same way: from India to Africa, from Italy to South America, since the beginning of time. It made me passionate to create a world that brought people together through the universal language of jewellery.
The deeply emotional textures of these fragmented talismans symbolise how I felt at various moments in my life, as I poured my feelings into the wax. I hope you carry them on your own adventures to remind you of your strength, before passing them on.” - R.M.
