Earrings are also cast in recycled bronze and plated in 24-karat gold, although the earring posts are made of sterling silver. Our rings are cast in sterling silver and plated in 24-karat gold. There is a difference in colour between 9-karat and 24-karat gold. The latter is a rich, darker colour, while the former is a lighter tone. There is also a difference in how pieces age and should be cared for. Solid gold will last a lifetime, while we advise that you do not wear 24-karat plated-gold pieces whilst sleeping, exercising, or in water. You should also keep your plated jewellery in a cool, dry place when it is not being worn. We offer a complimentary repairs service for all our jewellery.
In most instances, we can offer pendants without a chain. Please contact our Clients Team via email for further details.

Aftercare
To make sure that your gold-plated pieces remain as shiny as possible, we advise that you do not wear your Modern Heirloom whilst sleeping, exercising, or in water. Please be careful to avoid contact with oils, lotions or perfumes. Wipe jewellery clean with a soft cloth before putting it away, and keep it in a cool, dry place when you're not wearing it. Keep pieces separate so that they don't rub together.
The best place is the jewellery box provided, or another lined box or soft pouch.
Pearls are natural materials and can be fragile, so please handle them with care. The best way to clean your pearls is by applying washing-up liquid, and then wiping each pearl with a damp sponge.

Our founder, Rosh, created the Leone Medallion as a reminder to be strong in moments of self-doubt. One of the first Alighieri pieces, it was created with wax from a recovered and restored Venetian coin. It is worn as a reminder of strength and courage on all your adventures. When Rosh discovered the coin, it reminded her of the passages in which Dante, lost in the dark wood, is confronted by a terrifying lion. Dante is overcome until a guide appears: the Roman poet, Virgil, one of Dante’s heroes. In this moment, despair turns to courage. This is what the Lion Club pieces represent. Discover the Lion Club here.
Our jewellery is plated only once. The plating thickness is measured in microns.
Rhodium is a rare and precious metal that is very durable with a high reflectance. We use it to plate a selection of our jewellery pieces.
Our Modern Heirlooms are made out of a base of bronze or of precious metals such as silver and gold. These metals are highly durable and are meant to last a lifetime, so do feel substantial when worn.
Each Alighieri Modern Heirloom begins its life in wax, hand-carved by Rosh, as she sets off on an emotional journey through the imaginary realms that connect her and the brand to Dante's Inferno. Once the wax piece has come into being, it is cast in plaster to form a mould and then melted away, leaving the perfect space for molten bronze, recycled silver or recycled gold to be poured in its place, creating, as it cools, the solid form of the piece. Once out of the mould, each element is cleaned and plated before being hand finished with love in our Hatton Garden studio.
RESPONSIBILITY
Recycling precious metals is standard practice in the jewellery industry because of the high value inherent in the material. Recycled precious metals are gold, silver and platinum extracted from existing metal pieces. The precious element is separated from any other metals it is mixed with, then melted down to be reused in new designs. The sterling silver we use is 100% recycled, as is the gold in our solid gold and fine jewellery Modern Heirlooms.
Our pearls are farmed. We believe environmental and social stewardship are fundamental aspects of responsible pearl farming and, where possible, we choose to work with suppliers and pearl farmers who share our beliefs. You can read more about the values and standards that underpin our supplier relationships in our Supplier Code of Conduct.
We believe that our modern heirlooms deserve heirloom boxes that are designed to last forever - we are working to find ways to create forever boxes from recycled materials and plan to achieve this in 2022. Currently, our outer cardboard mailer and postcards are widely recycled; our white cardboard boxes are protected by a thin plastic layer and can be recycled with some curbside collections. Check with your local authority to be sure.
Our business is founded on principles of sustainability and ethical practice. We use 100% recycled sterling silver and gold and upcycle elements of our raw materials mix to minimise waste. Where possible, we choose to source precious metals and stones from suppliers certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, a standards-setting organisation established to advance responsible ethical, human rights, social and environmental practices throughout the gold, silver, platinum group metals, diamond and coloured gemstone jewellery supply chain. We are RJC members ourselves and working towards becoming certified in 2022.
We are highly invested in protecting and supporting the local heritage and craft of Hatton Garden and the UK’s historic jewellery manufacturing quarters. We create jobs and facilitate apprenticeships and maintain a walkable supply chain practice in our Hatton Garden neighbourhood.
We are also committed to charitable work. Since 2020 we have raised over £60,000 for the Trussell Trust to help those in poverty, and over £77,000 for Refuge to support women and children experiencing domestic abuse. This year we are continuing our partnership with Refuge as well as supporting Women for Women International in donating 100% of net profits from the sales of three exclusive talismans.
You can read more about our commitment to sustainable and ethical practice here and in the documents below.
