Responsibility, Transparency and Ethics_

Alighieri creates forever talismans with a responsible and transparent practice. One of our founding values was - and still is - to put people and planet first.

Each piece starts with our Founder, Rosh Mahtani, a Roman candle, and fragments of wax. Rosh hand carves each Alighieri talisman, creating imperfect and textured sculptures, imbuing them with emotion and story.

These delicate, textured wax pieces are then carefully wrapped up and passed to the care of our casters in the UK’s historic jewellery manufacturing districts.

Every step of our process is driven by human beings and their stories, from Dante to Rosh to our team... to you.

Our Modern Heirlooms are transformed from wax to bronze, 100% recycled sterling silver and 100% recycled gold through the ancient and magical technique of lost-wax casting.  Each piece is carefully finished, gold plated and polished in the foundry before making its way back to our studio for assembly by our talented in-house Production team. All excess metal waste is reused, cast into new talismans the following day.

Alighieri is committed to working with local British manufacturers. We are highly invested in protecting and supporting the heritage and skill in the UK’s historic jewellery manufacturing quarters; we create jobs and facilitate apprenticeships to ensure the longevity of the craft.

We are also committed to materially reducing our carbon footprint. Creating our jewellery wholly in the UK supports us in that effort.

We believe strongly in emission reduction over offsetting and will be publishing our carbon reduction roadmap across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 in June 2022. You can read our 2021 carbon impact report in full here.

Our talismans are cast in bronze, 100% recycled sterling silver and 100% recycled gold. Recycled metals carry a lower carbon emissions footprint than mined metals; using them helps us to minimise our environmental impact.

We source our precious metals from Cooksongold who are part of the Heimerle + Meule GmbH group and certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council, the world’s leading standards setting organisation for the jewellery and watch industry.

Many of our chains are handmade, link by link in our studio in the heart of London’s Hatton Garden. All other chains are sourced from responsible suppliers that we know and trust; we are working towards ensuring all our chains are procured from RJC-certified suppliers.

Each one of our pearls is completely unique and varies in shape and size. The pearls we use are farmed – we believe environmental and social stewardship are fundamental aspects of responsible pearl farming and, where possible, we choose to work with suppliers and pearl farmers who share our beliefs and abide by our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Our diamonds are ethically sourced and adhere to the Kimberley Process and the World Diamond Council's
System of Warranties. We select our diamonds exclusively from trusted RJC-certified suppliers. Each diamond used in our jewellery is assessed for its cut, colour, clarity, and carat and hand-set in place Hatton Garden.

Our gemstones are also ethically sourced through our trusted suppliers, the majority RJC-certified.
Like our diamonds, each gemstone is hand-picked for quality and hand-set in place.  Please contact us  if you would like more information on the provenance of any of the precious gems used in our pieces.

Alighieri is dedicated to circularity as a way to ultimately extend the life of every piece of jewellery we create. We craft timeless Modern Heirlooms to last a lifetime and beyond. We offer a complimentary repairs service for all our jewellery, ensuring that each talisman can be cherished for generations to come. Please contact our Clients Team via email to arrange a restoration.

Like our jewellery, our packaging is designed to last a lifetime and to provide a safe place for your Modern Heirloom. We are currently working to have 100% recyclable packaging by the end of 2022. Our packaging is produced in audited factories, ensuring fair and kind working conditions. Boxes that are damaged or returned are used in other aspects of the business.

Rosh is incredibly passionate about using Alighieri as a vehicle to support communities and raise awareness for those without a voice to tell their own stories.

In 2019, we designed three pieces inspired by the work of the Conservation Lower Zambezi, a charity working to protect wildlife and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in Zambia, where Rosh grew up. Ten percent of the retail price of these pieces was donated to CLZ.

In February 2020, we partnered with the Trussell Trust, a charity supporting food banks in the UK, in their Covid-19 campaign against food poverty. We donated 20% of our online sales to help those most affected, raising a total of over £55,000 in just three months.

Since 2021, we have partnered with Refuge, the UK’s leading charity helping women and their children experiencing domestic abuse. We have raised over £93,000 to date and are continuing to work together to raise awareness for their cause.

We believe that responsible business practices need their base in strong value foundations: we have established eight responsibility pillars that govern our decision making and guide our strategy. We have an internal cross-departmental Responsibility Committee formed of Responsibility Champions who drive improvement and innovation in our processes, constantly working to reduce our resource consumption and planetary impact.

Our business is entirely female-owned and led. We pay all our employees and interns at least the London Living Wage and are proud to have always done so.

The original collection of talismans is designed to bring you strength and courage on your adventures.

It all began when Rosh found Dante Alighieri lost in the Inferno, confronted by a lion... The lion was so terrifying that even the air around him was “trembling with fear”.

The lion forces him to summon strength and has become Rosh's everyday symbol of courage.
